MOT & Emission Tests Newbury

MOT Test

An MOT test is an annual inspection required by law on all vehicles in the UK older than 3 years (as well as some vehicles that are older than 1 year, see the Government website for more details). MOT tests follow strict criteria set out by the DVSA to determine whether your car is roadworthy and safe. A comprehensive set of vehicle safety checks must be completed by an MOT test centre. In addition the test must be completed by DVSA-approved examiners. The elements of your vehicle checked and tested include all the lights, all tyres, your seatbelts and your vehicles emissions. Rayner Bosch Car Services are one of Newbury’s longest established, highly experienced and most reputable garages. We're renowned for being Newbury's MOT, Servicing and Repair specialists and offer MOT & Emission Tests to our customers in and around Newbury.

An MOT test checks that your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards.

You must get an MOT for your vehicle by either:

  • the third anniversary of its registration
  • the anniversary of its last MOT, if it’s over 3 years old

And don't forget you can take your car for its annual MOT test up to 28 days before the expiry date shown on your previous MOT certificate. So, when you pass, your MOT is valid for 13 months as you won't lose any days for taking the car early. This could be particularly useful now with the pandemic causing a huge backlog of MOT appointments.

Should your vehicle fail any element of the MOT test, we can arrange for the necessary repairs to be quoted for and carried out for you. We'll then re-test your vehicle once all works have been completed. We can also adjust wheel alignment and supply and fit new tyres. We offer an efficient service at competitive rates. To book your MOT tests in Newbury, please phone 01635 46323 or alternatively email us at You can learn more about what's involved in an MOT test by reading our MOT information guide.

Vehicle Emission Tests

High exhaust emissions waste fuel and can cause an MOT failure. They can be caused by poor servicing or an engine malfunction. If your vehicle fails the emission test it fails the MOT. The problem must be fixed before you can get an MOT certificate.

In fact, your vehicle can also be tested during a roadside check by the Police. If it fails the check, you’ll be given a prohibition notice. You’ll have 10 days to fix the problem. If you do not fix it within this period you may be prosecuted.

If your vehicle is seriously in breach of the legal emission limits, or if it has other defects which make it dangerous, the notice will come into effect immediately. You will not be able to use the vehicle. You may also be prosecuted. So, it's worth getting a check if you think there might be a problem with your vehicle.

Our workshop has the latest petrol and diesel emission testing equipment so you can have confidence that your test will be as accurate as is technologically possible. By using Bosch emission diagnosis systems we can ensure a fast and precise emission test to DVSA standards for any petrol or diesel vehicle.
